Why should they...

"Bhayya, one chocolate pastry for me!" shouted Octo from our table while I was ordering pizzas, at the counter, for all of us.
She always liked to eat chocolate a lot and a lot of it,
ever since she was a baby. And I hated chocolate. She was glad that I hated it as she could have my share too. And I always gave it to her. She doesn't know that I do like to have it sometimes, but give it to her as I prefer her happiness to my likes. She has always been the sweetest one. She never let me down and has been with me in the much needed moments. Even though I was in IIT and she is doing her BA in english, she has been the real all-rounder. One whole cupboard in our home is filled with prizes and awards, of which my share is just 20% and rest all are her's. And she always warns my mom to show them to our guests as the prizes of both her children and not to diversify. Love u sis!

"535 Rs., Sir". The baker interrupt my thoughts.
"Add a chocolate pastry too."
"Which one?"
"Umm... one Black Forest."
"Ok. 575 Rs."
"Ok" I gave him a 500 Rp. note and a 100 Rp. note.
"5 Rs. change?"
"Yes". I could hear them laughing out loud out there.

I collected the change and rushed to the table. Shilpa, Sundi and Bini are the other fellas with us. I'm meeting Shilpa after about an year. The last time I met her was when she came to our college cultural fest in 2009. She put on some weight now and looks a lazier bum than before. Apparently, these are the symptoms of software jobs.

"So, what are u guys laughing about??" I joined them back.
"It's a girl talk". Shilpa replied, rolling her eyes in a way that it is not my business to know.
"Then, what were you doing here?", I jerked and everyone burst into fits of laughter.

Shilpa has always been a very sportive girl. She is a fun company and the centered item in most of our conversations. She is a friend to me and Octo since school. We lived in the same colony.

"That's a good one" said Sundi retarding her laughter.

Sundi was Shilpa's friend in BITS Ranchi. I have known her for a long time now through chatting and emails but met her only once before when she came to our cultural fest along with Shilpa.

"What exactly is an investment bank?" Sundi asked looking towards me.
"An investment bank helps an organization, which may be a company or a government or one of it's agencies, in the issuance and sale of new securities" I replied.
All blank faces.
"For example, imagine that you are a big company which is acquiring another small company" I continued pointing towards Sundi. "And I am an Investment bank. You approach me for help. I will help you in estimating: how much money will be needed, what is the best way in which you can get the funds using the assets you have, at what price will you be able to sell them, whom to sell, how much would the whole process cost you, etc.."
"How is it different from normal bank?" Finally Bini opened her mouth.

Bini is Sundi's friend from her workplace, i.e., since the past 6 months. She is a kinda stranger to me but the intro by Shilpa was comforting.

"It is different from normal bank because it doesn't have any accounts and you can't save money." Sundi tried to show her little knowledge on investment banks by clearing Bini's query.
"Yes. Moreover, normal banks give loans. Whereas, we just connect the need for money with the source of money" I clarrified.
Bini gave a gesture of 'understanding/almost understood' by shaking her head up and down.
"Actually, investment banks do sometimes risk by buying the securities/assets themselves. They then resell them..."
"Cut the crap guysss. I'm bored!!" Octo interrupted me, and sneaked a pic with her new professional camera as we turned towards her. She was the fifth on the table for four, so we all are in. She is learning photography and is quite excited about it too. Nature and birds are her favs.

Our pizzas arrived and Octo was the first to grab her grub. The black forest pastry. Sundi is veg so she had her's seperate and rest of us were having shares of one slice each from each pizza. Barbeque is my fav so I grabbed two.
"Mmmm... delicious... I love the pizza in this bakery" Octo appreciated her food.
"Ya it's really good" Shilpa supported.
"Hmmmph who put this bloody bag here?" Apparently Shilpa kicked something at the corner under the table and is frustrated to find a grey coloured bag, the colour she disliked the most as it was the colour of her school uniform which she had to wear almost everyday without excuse.
None of us had a clue.
"Ask behind" Bini gestured towards the table behind us.
"Excuse me! Is this bag yours?" Shilpa asked the foreigners behind us lifting the backpack in her hand.
"No...""No...""No.." they answered in soft shaggy tones, looking at each other and shaking their heads.
"Somebody must have forgotten it" I said. "Lets give it to the bakery man he will take care".
Shilpa handed over the bag to me.
"Waiter" I shouted.
He looked towards me and signalled that he will come.
"It looks good. It is Livya bag. Must be around 700 or 800" Sundi said.
"Not just the bag, what if someone has their certificates inside?" Octo added.
"Yes Sir, what do you want?" the waiter is here.
"Somebody forgot their bag here." I told him.
"Where was it?"
"Under the table" I pointed towards the corner.
"I don't know who's bag this is."
"Just open and check. You may find his contact number" I suggested him while standing up from my chair to guide him do it.
"Most of the people in this bakery are foreigners!" Bini said.
"Of course, yaar... you are in Pune and this is German Bakery" Those were the last words from Octo and the last heard for all of us.

P.S.: Ankhi(23) and Octo(19) are the siblings who died in Pune blasts along with their three other friends who chose the death spot (out of 3287263 sq. km. of land area) for reunion. Ankhi passed out from IIT Kharagpur and is working in Morgan and Stanley. The occasion was in the celebration of both reunion and Ankhi's promotion at work. My heart goes out for them.

  2. I myself stepped into Ankik's shoes to show how they might have been moments before the blast...
It is very sad that innocent people fall victims to the acts of terrorism. It could have happened to anyone of us.
