Today's children are tomorrow's citizens.I just recalled this childhood quote and started wondering if I am a child or a citizen. Clearly, I'm not a child now. I hate it if someone calls me so (Some old people from my mom's village do it. Geez!!). I hated it ever since I was 13. I am both physically and mentally grown up now. By Law,
I am an adult from the time I crossed 18. I am even allowed to watch 'A' certified movies :). But my question here is am I a citizen??
Dictionary gives 3 different meanings for 'Citizen'
- A native, inhabitant, or denizen of a particular place: Seems like I can call myself Citizen of India. But this is the third and last meaning mentioned. Let's check with the other two.
- A resident of a city or town, especially one entitled to vote and enjoy other privileges there: This reminds me of the first time I cast my vote. I cast two votes, one for Lok Sabha and one for Assembly, at the same time. I was very excited. Proud too (of course, the party I voted for didn't win at either place :P). Taking some pain, I can cast my vote from anywhere in India, those regions with border issues being exception (in the bounds of my knowledge). So, being a little liberal, I can say I am entitled to vote. It also says that I should be able to enjoy other privileges. Actually, they should have said 'privileges permitted by law'. It's ok, I'll assume it. But, am I allowed to enjoy all privileges? Shunning the days of bandh, threats by political activists and few obligations, I am comfortable with my liberty. So, even by considering this meaning, I am close to a Citizen.
- A person owing loyalty to and entitled by birth or naturalization to the protection of a state or nation: This is the first meaning mentioned and the one of my interest. I like to read it once again. 'A person owing loyalty to and entitled by birth or naturalization to the protection of a state or nation'. It says that I owe loyalty to my nation. I know I am just reiterating things again and again but I am just overwhelmed with patriotism. I still remember my childhood when I slept cuddling my mom as she said the stories of Gandhiji and how he stood on truth. She told me to speak truth always, at any circumstances. I never uttered a lie when I was in school and for a long time after that. Never cheated anyone. Even to date, I feel it tough to say a lie. But, the world around me taught me how to live. It's full of lies and malice.Actually, what exactly does 'owing loyalty to my nation' mean? Am i called disloyal only if I sell some of my country's nuclear secrets to the enemies? Nation is nothing but a group of people. The people around you and yourself too come under it. Doesn't being disloyal to someone around you mean being disloyal to the nation? Here again the 'worthiness' comes. Some may say 'he/she is not worthy of being loyal to'. I would say to them 'Make yourself worthful'. Anyway I am not still sure about this 'being loyal' thing. It still confusing for me. Let me move on to the next part of the meaning. It says 'entitled by birth or naturalization to the protection of the nation'. So, Is it not required that I need to be a soldier or at least a cop to protect my nation or fight for it's sake? Is it my birth right? Then what am I waiting for all these days? Looks like either I'm not a complete citizen or I haven't realized it.
