film industry is india's cultural ambassador all around the globe.
This was said by SRK through twitter just a few minutes back. Well, no one can deny the fact that Shiv Sena made a fuss of poor Sharukh's comments and considering the context and the momentary dementia he must be into, there is absolutely no wrong in him saying this.
But what caught my attention here is the validity of the statement. Is our film industry truly acting as our cultural ambassador?? Are they actually depicting our culture in their movies?? Most of the movies are shot abroad. Instead of depicting our culture to outsiders (like chinese movies), almost all our movies are simply inheriting western culture. Well, I myself would not watch a movie on cultural basis (I haven't watched Parineeta yet :)). While I don't question the integrity of the makers, I'm just concerned about the above mentioned quote. Can we really call Indian film industry our 'Cultural ambassador'? I would say NO

They are cultural groundbreakers!!! Ask SRK to name one Hindi movie without a single English word or mini skirts clad-women in it and ask him to repeat the quote! ;)
ReplyDeleteBut in todays shrunken world is it possible to preserve the purity of any culture? Its bound to get polluted/influenced (depending on your viewpoint) by other cultures.

It's true that we cannot preserve the purity of culture. We have to realize, accept and live with it. While we all know this, it is insane to make such quotes. And that's my point.
